You Caught Your Reflection and Something Looked Different. Don't Ignore It

You're applying body lotion after a shower, half paying attention, when your eyes stop on a mole you've had for years. Something's off. Maybe it's bigger. Maybe the colour isn't quite what you remember. Or maybe you can't put your finger on it — you just know it doesn't look the way it used to.

Most of us react in one of two ways: we feel a flicker of worry and then get swept back into the day, or we talk ourselves out of it — "it's probably nothing, it's always been there." That moment of hesitation is exactly the moment that matters most. It's also where people most often lose time that, in dermatology, genuinely counts.

Why Your Moles Deserve a Closer Look

Moles are a normal part of having skin, and the vast majority are completely harmless. The catch is that melanoma — one of the most serious forms of skin cancer — can develop from a single, unremarkable-looking mole. Caught early, it's highly treatable. Left unchecked, it can spread quickly.

This isn't about living in fear of every freckle. It's about knowing your own skin well enough to notice real change, and having the confidence to get it checked rather than putting it off "for later."

The ABCDE Rule: Five Signs Worth Taking Seriously

Dermatologists worldwide use a simple framework to help assess whether a mole needs a professional look:

  • A – Asymmetry. A healthy mole is usually symmetrical. If one half looks noticeably different from the other, it's worth checking.
  • B – Border. Blurred, ragged or poorly defined edges can be a warning sign.
  • C – Colour. Uneven colour, or several shades of brown, black, or even red within the same mole.
  • D – Diameter. Moles larger than 6mm (roughly the size of a pencil eraser) deserve closer attention.
  • E – Evolving. Any change — in size, shape, colour, as well as itching, bleeding or crusting — is the most important sign of all.

If even one of these sounds familiar, it's not a reason to panic — but it is a good reason to book a consultation.

Who's Looking After Your Skin at My Medyk

Mole checks at My Medyk are carried out by Dr n. med. Ewa Iwan-Chuchla, a dermatology and venereology specialist holding both first and second degree specialisations, along with a PhD in dermatology. Dr Iwan-Chuchla is registered with the UK General Medical Council and is a member of The Royal Society of Medicine in London, regularly attending conferences and training to stay current with the latest developments in dermatology.

She sees both adult and paediatric patients, and consults in Polish, English and German — so patients can describe their concerns in the language they're most comfortable with, without communication getting in the way of the conversation that matters.

What a Consultation Looks Like

A dermatology consultation at My Medyk is, above all, an unhurried and thorough skin assessment — no rushing, no sense that you're "wasting the doctor's time" over a single mole. Dr Iwan-Chuchla assesses the change, recommends further investigation if needed, and explains every step clearly, without burying you in medical jargon.

That moment — a prompt diagnosis and a clear plan — is what brings patients the most relief. Hearing "this looks fine, but I'm glad you came in" is far better than months of quiet uncertainty.

When It's Worth Booking

You don't need to wait for an obvious red flag. It's worth booking a check if:

  • you have many moles or freckles and find it hard to judge on your own which ones are "normal",
  • there's a family history of melanoma or other skin cancers,
  • you spend a lot of time in the sun, or have used sunbeds in the past,
  • you've noticed any of the changes described in the ABCDE rule,
  • it's simply been a while since your skin had a proper professional look.
