Performing ultrasound examinations during pregnancy is essential and should be done by every expectant mother.

We can diagnose a pregnancy within 30 days from the first day of your last menstrual period. We can determine the sex of the baby at about 16 weeks of pregnancy, and in some cases even at 12 weeks.

Ultrasound

The first scan should be six weeks from the first day of your last menstrual period. This scan aims to visualise the embryo and detect a pulse.

The second scan is at 11-13 weeks of pregnancy. This scan is mainly to detect the presence of fetal genetic defects but also large defects.

A third scan at 20-24 weeks of pregnancy

The aim of this scan is to detect congenital anomaly, such as:

  • heart failure,
  • defects in the central nervous system,
  • defects in the kidney and bladder,
  • defects of the spine and limb bones,
  • craniofacial defect,
  • defects in the cavity between chest and abdomen and the abdominal wall.

The fourth scan at 30-32 weeks of pregnancy
The aim of the scan is the early detection of defects only seen in the third trimester of pregnancy.

The fifth scan - 38 weeks pregnant
The aim of this scan is to assess the size of the fetus, placenta maturity and the amount of amniotic fluid.
