Vampire facelift is a regenerative treatment that involves injecting the patient's own blood (specifically platelet-rich plasma) as a wrinkle filler. It is a good alternative for women who are afraid of having an unnatural facial expression as a result of Botox injection, or are reluctant to undergo plastic surgery. This no-scalpel procedure is popular among such celebrities, as e.g. Kim Kardashian. However, a plasma injection does involve an element of risk, so it is not suitable for everyone. Find out more about the Vampire facelift, patients that are safe to use it and its potential side effects.

Vampire facelift is a non-surgical treatment that involves injecting the patient's own blood (specifically platelet-rich plasma) as a wrinkle filler.

What is platelet-rich plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma is a product made of patient's own blood. It contains great many cells and growth factors – peptides that stimulate division of other cells and are a crucial element of skin tissue biological regeneration.

Who is this procedure suitable for?

Filling wrinkles with one’s own plasma is a method available to patients whose skin requires bio-stimulation and regeneration. It is also a valid treatment for allergy sufferers who must avoid exposure to ingredients found in wrinkle fillers. This is because a product created from one’s own blood is biologically inactive and creates no risk of allergic reaction. It is also a good alternative for women who are afraid of having an unnatural facial expression as a result of Botox injection, or do not wish to undergo plastic surgery to remove wrinkles (for medical or personal reasons).

What does a Vampire facelift treatment look like?

Before the procedure, a doctor collects a blood sample from the patient (usually 8 ml). The sample is then placed inside a special centrifuge. Inside the device there is a special sterile and amorphous gel that separates red blood cells from platelet rich plasma (PRP). Having separated PRP plasma, the doctor adds to it a special reagent (thrombin or calcium chloride) that activates the platelets to produce cytokines – proteins stimulating cell growth. The ready formulation can be applied in two ways: either using a method originating in mesotherapy, or linearly along the wrinkles (volumetry).

What happens during the procedure is identical to the wound healing process, namely:

  • Stem cells multiplication is stimulated;

  • Fibroblasts are forced to produce new collagen, leading to the regeneration and revitalization of skin cells. The result is a moist and rejuvenated skin;

  • New blood vessels are created.
